The Best Family Photo Locations in Buffalo for Every Vibe

One of the most common questions I get asked as a family photographer is: “Where should we take our photos?” And honestly, it’s such a good question—because your session location can play a huge role in how your images feel and what kind of story they tell.

From a client’s point of view, there are a few things to think about:

  • What kind of backdrop do you love? Fields, woods, beaches, or more of an urban feel?

  • What fits your family’s personality? Do you want playful and casual or more styled and editorial?

  • Are you okay with a little bit of a drive, or do you prefer something closer to home?

  • And especially if you have little kids—will this location be comfortable and safe for them to roam around and be themselves?

From my photographer perspective, I’m thinking about a few other things, too. I want beautiful lighting, minimal crowds, and a setting that enhances—not distracts from—your family’s connection. I also make sure any place we shoot is legally permitted for photography and that it's accessible for families of all types.

Outdoor Family Photo Location Ideas

If you’re planning a session and wondering what kind of spot fits your family best, here are a few of my favorite Buffalo-area photo locations for every kind of vibe:

1. For the Field-Lovers & Sunset-Chasers: Knox Farm State Park (East Aurora, NY)

We’ll start with one of my absolute favorites and with good reason. Knox Farm is one of those locations that seems to have it all. Rolling fields, winding trails, tall grasses, seasonal flowers, and the kind of golden-hour light that makes every session feel a little bit magical. It’s also huge—so even on a busy day, we can usually find a tucked-away spot—and it’s a kid favorite because they get room to run and explore. Whether you’re going for laid-back, barefoot-in-the-grass vibes or want to dress up and go full boho glam, Knox delivers every time.

2. For the Rustic & Woodsy: The Commissioner’s Cabin at Chestnut Ridge State Park

If you love tall trees, wooded paths, and a slightly cozier, more rustic feel—Chestnut Ridge has what you’re looking for. The Commissioner’s Cabin area features a peaceful lake, a cute bridge, and a mix of forest and open spaces. It’s especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves turn to gold and rust tones, but it’s gorgeous year-round. If your kids love to explore trails and you love the idea of woodsy warmth and earthy tones in your gallery, this might be your spot.

3. For the Beachy & Breezy: Woodlawn Beach (Blasdell, NY)

Looking for sandy toes, grassy dunes, and wide open skies? Woodlawn Beach is a favorite for families who love that relaxed, summery vibe. The tall dune grasses add texture and interest, and the views over Lake Erie—especially at sunset—are beautiful. It’s a great option for those who want their session to feel like a little escape. If you want beach photos, this is the way (any Mandalorian Fans? ;-).

4. For the Urban-Meets-Artsy: Albright-Knox Art Gallery & Hoyt Lake (Buffalo, NY)

This location offers a unique mix of architecture, art, and nature. You’ve got the elegant stairs and sculptures at the art gallery, the serene beauty of Hoyt Lake, and nearby pockets of greenery and flowers, including a rose garden in season. It’s ideal for families who love a bit of variety, or for anyone looking for a slightly more editorial feel with clean lines, creative framing, and a balance of urban charm and natural beauty. It’s also very walkable, which makes it great for little ones with energy to burn!

Final Thoughts:

At the end of the day, the “best” location is the one that feels right for your family. It should be a place where you can feel relaxed, connected, and free to be yourselves. My goal is always to help guide you toward a spot that makes you feel comfortable, fits your family's vibe, and sets the stage for genuine moments and beautiful memories.

Still not sure what’s the best fit? I’ve got you covered. I help every client choose a location based on their family’s unique personality, needs, and goals for the session. And whether we’re running in a field, splashing by the lake, or strolling through the city, I promise we’ll make some magic.
