Why Summer Family Photos Are More Relaxed Than You Think | Buffalo Family Photographer

A lot of people tend to think of fall when they think about booking family photos in Buffalo. And it is a beautiful time of year with the changing leaves, cooler air, and often beautiful Western New York sunsets.

But there’s something to be said for summer sessions that can get overlooked: they're surprisingly relaxed.

As a photographer (and a mom of three energetic boys), I've found that summer family sessions often have a different feel than fall sessions. Families tend to arrive with less stress, kids are more relaxed, and everyone seems a little more willing to slow down and enjoy the experience.

Less Rushing, More Enjoying

During the school year, life can feel like a constant race from one activity to the next. Between school, sports, homework, and packed schedules…you know the drill.

Summer tends to bring a different pace. Your calendar is still busy, but there’s often a little more flexibility. The school and homework rush is on hold for a few months. That slower pace often translates into a more relaxed experience for everyone.

Kids Get to Be Kids

One of my favorite things about summer sessions is how they are usually pretty fun for kids. The weather is nice and they can explore, collect rocks, blow dandelions, run around, or play in the water.

And when kids are having fun, the photos will reflect that. Genuine smiles and authentic joy are what we are after.

Beautiful Light for Summer Family Photos in Buffalo

Summer evenings offer some of the most beautiful light of the year. And our Buffalo sunsets are so often gorgeous!

The sun stays out later, which means families don't have to rush to squeeze a session in immediately after work and summer camp. The warm, golden light creates a soft, dreamy look that photographs beautifully and adds a little extra magic to those candid moments.

Great Family Photos Don't Require Perfect Weather

One thing I've learned over the years is that the most memorable sessions aren't always the ones that go exactly according to plan.

Sometimes it's a windy evening. Sometimes it's 90 degrees and super humid. Sometimes the kids would rather run than sit still.

But those are often the sessions that create the most authentic memories. I’ve had sessions start off sunny, rain, and then be sunny again. Rainbows have happened. Wind gusts blow through. Every time, we’ve gone with it and still gotten great images.

The goal isn't perfection, it’s photographing your family just as you are right now.

Your Holiday Cards Are Already Taken Care Of

Lastly, and My Personal Favorite: They’re Done! Picture this: it’s September 2026. The kids have just started school, you’re adjusting to that routine, maybe your kids have fall sports, and it starts to dawn on you that the holidays are only a few months away. But…. you remember that you have photos for your holiday cards done already!

Your mental load is still crazy, but it’s that much lighter. Something to consider 😉.

Final Thoughts on Summer Family Photos in Buffalo, NY

Summer is full of moments worth remembering. Sandy feet, sun-kissed cheeks, wild hair, endless energy, and just that nostalgic feeling of childhood. Those moments deserve a place in your family story.

If you've been considering family photos, don't overlook summer. Whether we’re exploring Knox Farm, playing at Woodlawn Beach, or walking down Main Street in East Aurora (⬇️ that’s where these pictures were), It might just be the most relaxed and enjoyable season for your family to step in front of the camera.

Frequently Asked Questions About Summer Family Photos

What is the best time for summer family photos in Buffalo?

Summer family sessions are typically scheduled approximately 60 minutes before sunset when the light is soft and flattering. This is later in the summer months so plan for your session to start about 7:00-7:30PM.

Are summer family photos too hot?

Not usually. Evening sessions tend to be much cooler than midday, and we keep things relaxed and child-friendly. That said, I have had summer sessions that are pretty hot, so if you’re very sensitive to the heat, I’d suggest a different season.

What should we wear for summer family photos?

Lightweight fabrics, neutral colors, and comfortable clothing photograph beautifully during summer sessions. Choose colors that complement one another, not matching!
